What the Bible Says About Worry and Anxiety
Anxiety has become one of the defining struggles of our generation. Worry about the future. Worry about our children. Worry about health, finances, relationships, and a world that feels increasingly unstable. If you are a person of faith who also struggles with anxiety, you may have even added guilt to the mix — wondering why you cannot seem to simply trust God and be at peace.
First: Your Anxiety Does Not Mean Your Faith Is Weak
Before we look at what the Bible says about worry, let us settle something important. Struggling with anxiety does not mean you are a bad Christian. Many of the Bible’s greatest heroes struggled with fear, doubt, and despair. Elijah collapsed under a tree and asked God to let him die. David wrote psalms soaked in anguish. Even the disciples trembled in a boat while Jesus slept. Anxiety is a human experience — not a spiritual failure.
What Jesus Said About Worry
In Matthew 6:25-27, Jesus addressed anxiety directly: “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?”
Jesus was not dismissing the reality of our concerns. He was redirecting our attention — from the problem to the Provider.
The Prescription in Philippians 4
Philippians 4:6-7 offers one of the most practical anxiety prescriptions in all of Scripture: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
Notice the formula: prayer plus thanksgiving equals peace that transcends understanding. It is not a peace that makes sense. It is a peace that guards — like a soldier posted at the door of your heart.
Casting Your Cares
1 Peter 5:7 gives us one of the most comforting images in Scripture: “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” The word “cast” is active and intentional. You throw your worries onto God the way you would throw a heavy bag off your shoulders. Not once — as often as they return.
A Prayer for Peace Over Anxiety
“Lord, I am anxious and I need Your peace. I am casting every worry, every fear, every what-if onto You right now. I choose to trust that You are in control of every situation that concerns me. Fill me with the peace that only You can give — the peace that does not depend on my circumstances. Guard my heart and my mind today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
